A sharp, hot smell from a kitchen appliance is not something to work around. It is a specific signal with a small number of causes, and how you respond in the next thirty seconds decides whether the machine has a future. Most people push through one more batch, which is exactly the wrong instinct.

Overload is the usual cause

Nearly every domestic case comes from a stalled load: dry frozen fruit, a jug filled past the line, ice with no liquid, or nut butter that has climbed the walls whilst the blades spin free.   • Turn the coupling by hand: stiffness or grinding means a seized bearing.
  • Look for food or liquid that has got into the drive shaft area.
  • Inspect the cable along its length and at both ends for damage or heat marks.
  • Check the blade spins freely in its housing and that the seal is intact.
  • Smell the base itself; if the smell is in the motor rather than the food, stop there.

When to stop and get it looked at

Any of the following ends the do-it-yourself stage: a persistent electrical smell, visible scorching, a hot plug or socket, smoke of any kind, or a machine that trips the household breaker. Do not open a mains appliance yourself. Contact the manufacturer if it is in warranty, or a repairer if not, and mention exactly what it was doing when the smell appeared.

Preventing the next one

Liquid before solids, fill to the line and not beyond, pulse to break a stalled load rather than holding the button, and rest the motor after a minute of hard work. Keep water out of the base, dry everything properly, and do not use a blender for dry grinding it was never designed for. These habits cost nothing and are the difference between five years of service and one.

Whether repair is worth it

For an inexpensive personal blender, a seized motor generally is not economic to repair, though a worn blade assembly or a cracked cup usually is and both are commonly sold as spares. Check the parts availability before writing the whole machine off. And whatever you decide, recycle the old unit properly rather than putting a mains appliance in a household bin.
